It had been a long day and I came home to close the chicken coop door so they stay in for the night and stay quiet. Little did I know that when I released the rope that it would break causing the chicken coop door to slam down almost hurting a chicken. Now this chicken coop door, for me, is comparable to those old ways people were sentenced to death when they said “off with their head.” This death trap door pulley snapped and about cut a chicken into two.
After I got over the initial scare of being down a chicken and an egg in the morning I went in to get a flashlight because my phone light wasn’t cutting it. Then the rope wouldn’t go back into the door so I went and told my cousin who went to find a screw to put in the wood door and then put the rope on top. I went into the muddy chicken coop and my cousin threaded the rope to me and then I screwed the screw in but then found out my hands were to big to fit through the tiny spaces in the fenced wire all over the chicken coop. So she put the screw in and tied the rope to it. So far it has held!
After that problem was solved we had to figure out the problem of the chickens not wanting to go to bed and it being 11pm at night in winter so it was pitched black and we couldn’t see except for my flashlight that my dad gave me for Christmas, so thanks dad! After thirty minutes of me trying to pick them up without getting pecked at and my cousin holding the door open so it didn’t close we got them all in the coop out of the pen and into bed. I tried everything to get them in the coop: talking to them, gently nudging with my boots, picking them up, coaxing with food, and hitting them with a stick. It was different for every chicken to get them in the coop and we had to be careful not to let chicken that were already in the coop out when we coaxed others in. Eventually they were all in but, boy, was that the most eventful chicken coral of all times.
